Optional analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 to understand visits and improve the journal. On the published website, analytics will load only after you accept it. Rejecting analytics does not limit access to the photographs or stories. Advertising storage, advertising personalisation and Google signals are disabled in our website code.
With your consent, analytics processes information about page visits, approximate location, browser and device, and cookie identifiers. Google receives connection information, including your IP address. Our page-view code removes query strings and fragments from page addresses and sends only the referring website’s origin. We do not send names, email addresses or a user account ID to analytics.
Consent is our lawful basis for optional analytics. You can withdraw it at any time through Cookie settings. Withdrawal stops future analytics collection by this website and removes accessible Google Analytics cookies; it does not automatically erase information already sent to Google. Google processes information internationally. Provider terms describe safeguards for restricted transfers, including standard contractual clauses and UK addenda where applicable. Contact us for information about the safeguards relevant to your data.
Hosting and email
Cloudflare Pages hosts and helps protect this website. Cloudflare processes connection and technical information, including IP addresses, requested pages, browser information and security events, to deliver and secure the service. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in operating a secure, reliable journal.
Google Workspace handles email sent to [email protected]. We use your email address, message and attachments to answer enquiries and retain relevant correspondence. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in responding to enquiries. Please avoid sending unnecessary sensitive information.
Retention
We keep correspondence as long as necessary to resolve enquiries and related permissions or disputes, and review it for deletion when it is no longer needed. Permission records or information required for legal claims may need to be kept longer for those purposes. Hosting and security information is retained according to the service features used, operational security needs and provider terms. We do not maintain a separate visitor-log database.
Your consent preference lasts up to 180 days. Our code limits analytics cookies to 180 days without per-visit renewal. Google Analytics user-level and event-level retention is set to two months, with reset on new activity disabled. This setting does not set a two-month limit on all aggregate reports. Cookie expiry or consent withdrawal does not itself erase previously collected information.
Providers and international processing
Cloudflare and Google, including their authorised subprocessors, provide hosting, security, email and analytics. Their global infrastructure can involve processing outside the UK. Their processing terms describe safeguards for restricted transfers, including standard contractual clauses and UK addenda where applicable. Contact us for information about safeguards relevant to your information.
Read the Cloudflare data processing terms, Google Workspace data processing terms, and Google Analytics data processing terms. Relevant information may also be disclosed when legally required or necessary to establish or defend legal claims.
Your choices and rights
Depending on the circumstances, you may request access, correction, erasure, restriction or portability of your personal information, object to processing, and withdraw consent. Contact [email protected]. You can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office.
